SHAKE & BAKE: The Heartbreak of the Great 'Quake

First came the Shake: tectonic plates scraped past each other, unleashing the equivalent of 6,000,000 tons of TNT!   The first tremor scored 8.25 on the Richter Scale, and they felt it all the way to Vancouver--where it was 11.6 (Canadian Richtre, with exchange rate).

After the Shake came the Bake: three and a half days of burning of America's tenth largest city, civilization's largest fire. (add dramatic music here)

Communication lines, water lines, and whiskey lines were all down. Nearly a quarter million were homeless and more than 28,000 buildings were destroyed.

Did the City survive? You'll have to take Shake & Bake to know for sure!

Shake & Bake explores the causes and effects of the Great Earthquake and Fire of 1906, and how it still impacts the City's personality to this day.

Comedy equals Tragedy plus Time. We think enough time has elapsed since 1906 to explore this tragedy in a fun, humorous, yet very informative way.

tour distance: about 16 blocks tour duration: about two hours
hills: two blocks of slight uphill walking and two of slight-mild downhill walking
ending location: near Redwood Park, close to Montgomery and Columbus

This tour chronicles the most historically significant event in the City's history. Because of the importance of the 1906 Earthquake and Fire, we discuss it on many of our other tours, too, but not in the detail or scope of the Shake & Bake tour.

  • The Palace Hotel (and its world-class restrooms!)
  • The Transamerica Pyramid
  • Jackson Square, the one downtown survivor from 1906
  • Redwood Park, home to 80 redwoods
  • The Great Earthquake and Fire of 1906 (if this weren't already obvious)
  • An elevator ride all the way to China! (town)
  • some history on San Francisco’s favorite visitor, Mark Twain

  • Plus jokes, facts, stories, and all sorts of other interesting tidbits
