Since the lawless years of the Gold Rush, North Beach has
consistently been at the epicenter of revolutionary and revolting
behavior. One hundred years later, history repeats itself as the
neighborhood gives rise to three new American institutions: beatniks,
strippers, and socio-political comedians. From the 1950s to the 1970s,
the nightlife in North Beach has
never disappointed in its ability to entertain and offend.
For visiting post-WWII conservative America, the city’s behavior was
disgusting. To the San Francisco locals, it was an average Saturday
night. Join FOOT! for a neon-packed nighttime walk around the
neighborhood. Visit the bookstore where books were banned. See where
LSD was manufactured (sorry, no free samples). Stand in the spot
where Lenny Bruce was busted for profanity and where years later he fell
out a
